Unmasking vent IP address?

Is there a way to unmask and IP that was on my vent if someone is bothering me to i can ban/talk to them about if if its a friend trying to be funny? I have the log of all the people who have been on lately and there IP address', one matches my friends but he swears that it's somebody masking there IP and its not his.
