Questions about softball?
Sounds like your coach is a total tool...outfield is the gry area out behind the bases. Outfielders are really the last line of defense; your basemen are responsible for covering their base, primarily, but also for covering other areas of the infield. Shortstop, for example, would cover both 2nd and 3rd base if the 2nd or 3rd baseman were off the base. Say your 3rd baseman goes after a fly ball in foul territory. Shortstop would cover 3rd base. The pitcher, obviously, pitches, but also can cover 1st and home. The catcher, behind home plate, receives the ball, but also covers the territory behind the plate all the way to the backstop (for foul or missed pitches), and will also go after in right and left foul territory.Try to pick up the book "Softball for Dummies"; it will go into greater detail about all the positions, all the rules, some history of the game, and generally has tips for success. Good luck!
